“What truly amazes me about the Gulf of California is how alive it is. Its islands— populated not by people but by seabirds, sea lions, and lovely, life-asserting desert plants—give an impression of wilderness far beyond the proximity of the U.S. and mainland Mexico. Despite serious over fishing for some species, the Gulf is largely a safe haven. For us it is a safe haven too, an easily accessed place to marvel at wild abundance, wide horizons, and intense desert beauty.”

I have to say, nearly everything about my recent trip on the M/V Valentina to the Sea of Cortez was fantastic. The food was great, the service was great, and they even were pro-active in fixing things in our room that we were just noticing might have been a problem. Though there were two negatives I had on the trip. I had paid for a steel 100 larger tank, to have more air for safety, and there was maybe only 1 time out of 16 dives that they actually filled up the tank to standard. I kind of felt like I was ripped off since they wouldn’t fill the tank all the way up. Another, one of the divemasters, Carlos, was kind of short and gave me grief a couple of times when he should have just said, “sure, no problem”, and taken care of the problem. (they didn’t fill my wife’s tank one night, and the internet needed resetting one afternoon) If it wasn’t for those experiences I would have given it 5 stars. So they were close, they just need to give someone the service they paid for, fill up the steel tank, and don’t give the customers guff when it’s so simple to just do what they need. Oh, I’d recommend a cabin on the right side of the boat, or if on the left side, not cabin 9. It is the cabin furthest back, and loudest cabin on the boat as the generators are just under the cabin and create a lot of background noise. This was ok white noise when sleeping, but it was loud enough I also put a pillow over my head to cover my ears when sleeping. Plus there is a metal door going down to the generators right behind the cabin, and you can hear the door slam shut as the crew is in and out of that room before wake-up. (Wake-up just became the time they started going in and out of that door) The cabins to the front will hear the anchor chains, but luckily that noise lasts only a minute or two. So if I were going back on the boat, I’d choose a cabin in the middle of the boat on the right side.

We went on 3 trips/9 dives with Fun Baja in July, 2015. The diving was fantastic; we saw an amazing variety of sea life (sea lions, a huge group of rays, a starry moray eel, and many different types of fish). The best dives were at Los Islotes (sea lions), the ship wreck, and La Reina. Every dive was different, and 3 of the dives were among the 10 best out of my 90+ dives. My son and his family were very inexperienced, and our guide Carlos was extremely helpful. La Paz is a great place to visit; we will go back again to see the whale sharks!

La Paz, Baja has been one of my all time favorite sites to explore underwater for over 20 years now. I have been a SCUBA diver since 1996 and whether you are are die hard diver or prefer snorkel, kayak, walks along the shoreline, or just sit on the beach, Fun Baja truly is the team to partner with! They have been based in La Paz for 15 years and know exactly where to go to have the best wildlife experiences. Not much can compare with the chance to be in the water with sea lions or whale sharks, or to swim next to mobula rays! And on top of that, the Gray Whales in the area let you give them a good scratch and even a hug! In short, Fun Baja knows Baja and their professional staff do everything possible to make sure your experience is safe, comfortable and one you will never forget!
